Anthocyanins
Anthocyanins are a group of some 300 phytochemicals that give color to fruits (especially red and blue fruits), vegetables, and plants. Found in high amounts in acai, grapes, blueberries, and raspberries, anthocyanins have very potent antioxidant properties. Thought to contribute to the “French paradox”—that despite a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol and a prevalence of smoking, the French continue to have a low rate of heart disease—anthocyanins have been studied not only for their antioxidant power, but they may help regulate cholesterol, reduce blood "stickiness" and clotting, and defend cells against dangerous carcinogens.
