Vitamin C Supplement

Sustained release vitamin C supplements are wonderful for improving systemic immunity and building collagen to support the cardiovascular system. Linus Pauling famously researched vitamin C for many years and touted the evidence for its amazing benefits in disease prevention and health optimization. Interestingly, our bodies should be making vitamin C, but unlike most mammals who produce their own vitamin C in very high amounts (and even more under stress), humans do not have the ability to manufacture vitamin C. Because of this, it is imperative that we get what we need through diet and/or a vitamin C supplement.

Vitamin C Health

Vitamin C works wonders in building up immunity and improving health. It is a highly potent antioxidant. Vitamin C is found in foods like oranges, lemons, limes. Vitamin C was first recognized for preventing sailors from developing scurvy on ships. A sustained-release vitamin C supplement is an effective way to get the vitamin C you need to support and boost health throughout the body.

What is Sustained Release Technology (SRT) And Why Is It Important?

Sustained Release Technology means that the vitamin C slowly releases into your body over a 6 hour period, thus avoiding the common side-effects of diarrhea and upset stomach caused by most high-dose vitamin C supplement products – effectively acting as a buffering agent.

This slow release is especially important because vitamin C has a very short half-life (about 30 minutes), meaning it leaves the body very quickly and therefore needs to be delivered in a constant stream to maintain levels that promote optimal health.

Instead of the vitamin C being dumped into your system all at once and wasted/excreted (like with a non-time release vitamin C supplement), your body is able to continually absorb what it needs, distributing it throughout the body to perform its many critical jobs.

What Can A Vitamin C Supplement Help Me With?*

  • Support the immune system, inhibit viral replication, promote healing and protect cells from damage.
  • Build and strengthen collagen to provide essential support for the blood vessels, arteries, ligaments, bones, gums and teeth.
  • Increase metabolism, promote weight loss, and boost energy production by making carnitine, the amino acid responsible for transporting fat to mitochondria for conversion to energy.
  • Promote brain and eye (retina) health.
  • Improve heart function and overall cardiovascular health.
  • Discourage calcium/plaque formation on artery walls.
  • Regenerate other antioxidants like vitamin E and CoQ10.
  • Neutralize oxidative damage caused by free radicals and protect cells from injury and death.
  • Increase artery and blood vessel flexibility and prevent inflammation in the cardiovascular system.
  • Promote adrenal gland function, which uses large amounts of vitamin C to protect the body from stress.
  • Boost production of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter critical to brain function that's known to affect mood.

Why do we need vitamin C?

We need vitamin C because our bodies should be making it. Unlike most mammals who produce their own vitamin C in very high amounts (and even more under stress), humans do not have the ability to manufacture vitamin C. Interestingly, we have 3 out of the 4 enzymes needed to make vitamin C, but the 4th enzyme is turned off — the gene that made the 4th enzyme mutated and no longer is expressed in humans. Therefore, we must obtain vitamin C through our diet and/or a vitamin C supplement in order to support proper health.

What Are The Symptoms of Vitamin C Deficiency?

According to the National Institutes of Health, too little vitamin C can lead to signs and symptoms of deficiency, including:

  • Dry and splitting hair
  • Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)
  • Bleeding gums
  • Rough, dry, scaly skin
  • Decreased wound-healing rate
  • Easy bruising
  • Nosebleeds
  • Weakened tooth enamel
  • Swollen and painful joints
  • Anemia
  • Decreased ability to fight infection
  • Possible weight gain because of slowed metabolism

Can You Replenish A Deficiency Taking Only The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)?

No. The RDA is the minimum required to avoid death from scurvy, not the maximum needed for good health. As in all cases, "deficiency" is not something that's digital – meaning you either have it or you don't – it's a matter of degrees. Researchers are proving the many ways in which "sub-clinical scurvy" (meaning you are deficient but not immediately about to die) is significantly detrimental to health and makes the body vulnerable to various kinds of damage.

Why is Lysine included?

Lysine, or L-lysine, is an essential amino acid, which means that it is necessary for human health but cannot be made by the body. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Lysine is important for proper growth, and it plays an essential role in the production of carnitine, a nutrient responsible for converting fatty acids into energy and helping to lower cholesterol. Lysine appears to help the body absorb and conserve calcium, and it plays an important role in the formation of collagen.

Lysine inhibits viral replication and therefore is very helpful to the immune system in fighting off infections. Taking lysine supplements can speed recovery time and reduce the chance of recurrent breakouts of the herpes infection, such as fever blisters or cold sores. Lysine also plays a role in preventing plaque from forming on artery walls. Lysine is one component of a protocol proposed by Linus Pauling to promote optimal heart and immune health.

"Jigsaw's C w/srt has been a boon to my family's health. We've been taking it regularly without any tummy upset (1000 mg for the kids and 2000 mg for the adults). When any of us has experienced a hint of something coming on - a scratchy throat or extra phlegmy-ness - we've added on regular dosing throughout the day. In the throes of winter and all of us are still hale and hearty!"

Pros: Can take between 4 and 8g a day w/ NO diarrhea!

Cons: None that I have seen at all.

"This is hands down the best Vitamin C supplement I've ever taken. I bought this as soon as it came out a couple weeks ago. I was VERY excited about it being sustained-release because I've always had digestive problems when I've taken high amounts of vitamin C. There's a ton of research supporting the benefits of higher doses, but I could never follow it because taking that high of a dose (even just 1 or 2 grams a day) always gave me diarrhea. Super frustrating! But so far with this vitamin C, I have not had a single emergency bathroom stop! I took 2 tablets - which is 2 grams! - right when I received it, and I had absolutely NO hint at all of stomach issues! Took another 2 at night like the suggested use says to do, and still great. After a couple days, I increased to taking 4 pills at a time to test that dose out, and still no problems at all! I'm so thankful for this product and SO excited that I finally found a vitamin C I can take a lot of!! Can already tell a boost in immunity while everyone around me is getting sick. And I'm also seeing an improvement in my skin healing quicker too, which is a bonus. Feel more energized and like I've been bouncing back better from stressful stuff in life. Love that. Thank you Jigsaw for creating it... All of my family members are getting a bottle for Christmas. :)"

Vitamin C 101:

Vitamin C is required for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. The body needs vitamin C to make its most abundant protein, collagen. Collagen is the cellular "glue" that holds the skin, blood vessels, arteries, muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments together. This is especially important in the artery walls, which must expand and contract with each beat of the heart.

Vitamin C is also essential for wound healing – both obvious, traumatic wounds and chronic wounds at the cellular level (such as free radical damage and inflammation). In fact, vitamin C is arguably the most effective and versatile antioxidant there is, being used by literally every system of the body to perform critical, health-maintaining tasks.

Background Information:

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. Water-soluble vitamins cannot be stored in the body, meaning the body must have a continuous stream of this nutrient to maintain necessary levels for optimal health. Unlike most mammals, humans do not have the ability to make their own vitamin C. Therefore, we must obtain vitamin C through our diet or through a vitamin C supplement. Vitamin C is found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, however, larger amounts of this nutrient (greater than what can be obtained though food alone) can have wide-ranging health benefits.

In addition to being required for the synthesis of collagen, vitamin C also plays an important role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are critical to brain function and are known to affect mood. Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of carnitine, a small molecule that is essential for the transport of fat to cellular organelles called mitochondria (known as "cellular power plants"), for conversion to energy.

Recent research also suggests that vitamin C is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol to bile acids, which may have implications for blood cholesterol levels and the incidence of gallstones.

Also, the more vitamin C cells are exposed to, the more they absorb until they are saturated. Optimal health is supported when each cell in the body is saturated with multi-functional vitamin C.

Vitamin C is also a highly effective antioxidant. Even in small amounts vitamin C can protect indispensable molecules in the body, such as proteins, lipids (fats), carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) from damage by free radicals and reactive oxygen species that can be generated during normal metabolism as well as through exposure to toxins and pollutants.

Vitamin C may also be able to regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin E. Normal metabolism and daily "wear and tear" on the body produces oxygen free radicals which have degenerative effects on the body. When your body is weakened, free radicals are produced at an exponentially higher rate. Antioxidants like vitamin C neutralize free radicals and protect cells and tissues of all kinds against oxidative damage, promoting wellness on multiple levels.

Even in small amounts, vitamin C can protect indispensable molecules in the body, such as proteins, lipids (fats), carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) from damage by free radicals and reactive oxygen species that can be generated during normal metabolism as well as through exposure to toxins and pollutants.
