- Hi everybody, I'm Ashley with Jigsaw Health and today I'm here with Dr. Sean Hesler. He is a Naturopathic Physician and also the executive director of Naturalpaths Without Borders. Dr. Sean, why don't you tell us first, how you found out about Jigsaw Health?
- Hi, so I first found out about Jigsaw through Natural Partners. It was a new up and coming company that they started carrying. And I fell in love with the MAG SRT product.
- Yes, so word on the street is you're pretty into magnesium. I love magnesium. Any of my students will tell you it is my favorite nutrient. So when patients have tension that's either emotional or muscular tension, constipation, trouble sleeping, they will respond very very well with magnesium.
- Well we happen to love it too. So tell us a little bit about Naturalpaths Without Borders and what you all do?
- So we are a not for profit organization. And we do service projects internationally and in the United States. We have a collaborative project in Phoenix with Phoenix Allies for Community Health. It's an all volunteer free clinic. We work in Haiti, Mexico and pretty soon we'll be launching in Thailand. So in these service projects, we do a mix of clinical care, health education, and we also will help communities with supplements. And so Jigsaw has been instrumental in helping us help our patients.
- Yeah, that awesome. We love being able to support the cause. And we think it's super important and to be able to spread these good nutrients to other parts of the world where people really need it is amazing. So, it sounds like you're quite the traveler. Can you give us some expert tips on how people can travel and stay healthy at the same time?
- So the first thing is probiotics. So probiotics not only help us make our own nutrients in our body and they help with our immune defense. They can prevent us from getting sick in our guts as well.
- Right, especially with different types of food in different countries and your body's not used to certain things. So it kind of helps to make that transition inside the gut?
- Right, so they help you break down your food. So you're eating, if you're changing to a different culture, you're eating totally different foods that are just new to your body. So some of the stomach upset you get is just from different foods. They help you digest your food and help defend you against bugs that Montezuma's Revenge.
- Yeah, nobody wants that. Okay, what's your next tip?
- So, jetlag. The further you go, the harder it is to adjust. So melatonin is really important for making that shift. So one tip that I give people when they're changing time zones is on the day that you're traveling, fall asleep at the same time that you would in your target time zone. And melatonin can help make that happen.
- Right. Well on that note, so Jigsaw carries Ancient Minerals magnesium lotion. This stuff is the good night version so it has melatonin in it. This is a nice, easy travel size. It's only 2 1/2 fluid ounces. You can throw it even if you're using a travel bag. But I just keep this on the night stand and if I have trouble falling asleep, just a little bit of it goes a long way. And it really helps to fall asleep.
- And topical magnesium, this is a lotion. It's really good for those aches and pains you get from sleeping weird on the plane or hauling a heavy pack when you travel as well.
- Absolutely. And of course, don't forget to bring with you your MAG SRT because that's going to be your biggest dose of magnesium for the day and it will slowly release so that you can avoid some of that muscle stiffness and cramps because you know, let's face it, there's not a lot of room on the airplane these days. Okay so what's your last tip?
- So taking care of yourself emotionally is also really important. When you're doing a service trip like this, you're working a totally different culture, it's easy to get homesick. It's easy to have culture shock when you're traveling, so it's important to take care of yourself. There's an exercise that we run through with our volunteers called the Unpacking Exercise where we basically practice with each other, speaking for two minutes on some event, something that happened on your trip that impacted you emotionally. And so you're kind of practicing processing everything and figuring out how you're going to tell people back home about the things that you did on your trip. And as well, it's also really important to have someone back home who you can talk to about your trip for a couple hours and just download, get updates on what happened. Stateside when you're traveling.
- Yeah because a lot of times after a big experience like that, it's really hard to condense it down and everybody wants to know how your trip was and it can feel overwhelming to try to explain it. So I can see how that exercise would be really helpful and preparing you for that when you get home. And as always, of course, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, especially when you're traveling.
