Migraine: Conventional and Prescription Medications

  • Over-the-counter Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil®), and naproxen (Anaprox®, Aleve®), or prescription-strength NSAIDs.
Note: Speak to your health professional about the risks of using COX-2 Selective (Bextra®, Celebrex®, and Vioxx®) and Non-Selective Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®) and Naproxen (Aleve®), among others. These have been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, and some COX-2 Selective NSAIDs have been withdrawn from the market. Read more from the Food and Drug Administration.
  • Beta-blockers (propranolol)
  • Anticonvulsant agents (Depakote®), gabapentin (Neurontin®)
  • Antidepressants (tricyclics, SSRIs)
  • Calcium-Channel blockers (diltiazem, nimodipine, verapamil)
  • Ergots: Ergotamine (dihydroergotamine (DHE), methysergide)
  • Narcotics (propoxyphene)
  • Anti-emetics (metoclopramide, prochlorperazine) to relieve nausea and vomiting

Warning: The FDA warns that certain Triptan migraine drugs may be dangerous if taken with SSRI or SNRI antidepressant medications. Triptans are prescribed to abort migraines when they are in the process of occurring. SSRIs and SNRIs are used to prevent the occurrence of migraines. The combination therapy of triptans and SSRIs / SNRIs may produce a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome or “serotonin storm,” when serotonin reaches excessive levels. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include restlessness, hallucinations, loss of coordination, fast heartbeat, rapid changes in blood pressure, increased body temperature, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Read more about the FDA warning.

Still doing well so far. I have chronic migraines and the magnesium seems to be helping a great deal. In about 7 months, my migraines went from 20+ per month to 2+ per month. The only thing that I did differently was use the magnesium. I'm very well pleased with your company from the website design all the way to the quickness of your shipping. Thanks for the email follow-up and it's great to see a company that hasn't lost its sense of customer service. It's a pleasure doing business with you.
