Liver Dysfunction: Conventional and Prescription Medications
Ideally, liver dysfunction should be treated with dietary changes and vitamin supplementation as directed by your healthcare professional. Prescription medications are utilized for advanced liver diseases, and are prescribed specific to the condition.
Certain medications should be avoided if the liver is not functioning optimally:
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol®, Nyquil®, Percocet®, Excedrin®, Darvocet®, and Vicodin®)
- Medications that have the potential to cause liver dysfunction. Some of these include psychotropic medications (antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers), NSAIDs, and corticosteroids. Read the side effects on the prescription insert and/or ask your pharmacist.
- Medications to treat high blood cholesterol levels, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor®) or simvastatin (Zocor®)
