Inflammation is not actually a bad thing. It is simply the body's basic response to injury. Inflammation is a process in which white blood cells and chemicals protect the body from infection, and repair injury. The immune system, sensing inflammation or irritation, creates a protein chain called CIC (Circulating Immune Complex), which is tagged specifically to that irritation.
During the inflammation process, white blood cells are released to protect the body from injury. These white blood cells have chemicals within them that, when leaked, induce swelling. If the injury occurs near the surface of the skin, the damaged area will throb and become red and warm. Blood flow also increases during inflammation. Inflammation can also affect internal organs, displaying a variety of symptoms depending upon the organ involved. The most common physical indicator of inflammation is pain.
Even pain is a healthy response when it causes us to let an injured part rest. Rest permits the body to continue the inflammation process through to its appropriate end: restored tissue and function. A healthy inflammation response is part of the body's ongoing self-maintenance when dealing with daily wear and tear. To promote whole health, it is vital to provide the body with the necessary vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to support a healthy inflammation cycle.
A healthy inflammation cycle has been found to be linked to the health of many other systems and organs in the body including: heart health, healthy blood glucose levels, healthy weight management, joint health, periodontal health, and respiratory health.*
