Attention Deficit Disorder: Common Causes
The causes of ADD/ADHD are medically controversial. They include:
- Allergic reactions to food additives such as artificial colors and preservatives
- Allergy (bad reaction) to refined sugar
- Candida overgrowth9
- Multiple food intolerances (wheat, dairy) and multiple chemical sensitivities — these may be related to a dysfunctional immune system
- Frequent childhood ear infections may be linked to later hyperactivity
- Micronutrient deficiencies of trace minerals, especially trace minerals such as magnesium, iodine, iron, and zinc6
- Natural light deficiency — A circadian rhythm disorder due to lack of adequate sunlight may produce symptoms of ADD/ADHD.
- Hypoglycemia — Episodes of extremely low blood sugar may trigger neurological symptoms that mimic ADD/ADHD.
- Heavy metal toxicity (such as lead, mercury, or cadmium) — possibly related to a dysfunctional immune system.9
- Poor teaching methods combined with lack of discipline at home. This may contribute to a learned type of ADD/ADHD, where inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are learned behaviors rather than neurological disorders.
