HyperLink Vitamin B12 deficiency is rare in the young, but it's not unusual in older people: Probably 10 to 20% of the elderly are deficient in B12. This may be because older people have lower levels of stomach acid. The vitamin B12 in our food comes attached to proteins, and must be released by acid in the stomach in order to be absorbed. When stomach acid levels are low, we don't absorb as much vitamin B12 from our food. Fortunately, vitamin B12 supplements don't need acid for absorption, and should therefore get around this problem. However, for reasons that are unclear, one study found that B12 deficient seniors need very high dosages of B12 supplements to normalize their levels, as high as 600-1000mcg daily.

B-12 Methylcobalamin may help:*

  • Support energy production.
  • Maintain mental and emotional well-being.
  • Promote healthy homocysteine levels.
  • Accelerate nerve cell and red blood cell growth.

Background Information:

Vitamin B-12 helps maintain healthy nerve and red blood cells, make DNA and RNA, replicate cells, and produce energy—all to help you feel better.

While food provides some of the B-12 you need, absorbing B-12 may be difficult for some people. As you age, for example, the stomach acid that helps release B-12 from the proteins in food diminishes. Lowered levels of this gastric acid—said to be found in 30% of adults aged 50 or more—can greatly interfere with your ability to absorb B-12 from food.

In addition, if you follow strict vegetarian and vegan diets—those that avoid meats and other animal byproducts that contain much of the B-12 we get from food—you may have a B-12 deficiency.

Finally, if you have a chronic digestive condition—like Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease, Candidiasis, and others—you may not be able to absorb the B-12 you need from your diet simply because you may not have enough “intrinsic factor” required for absorption. After B-12 is split from the proteins in food, it combines with intrinsic factor for absorption in the intestines.

Fortunately, B-12 deficiencies can be restored in the liver with B-12 supplements. Vitamin B-12 comes in many forms, but only the active methyl form can be readily used by the central nervous system. Other inactive forms of vitamin B-12—hydroxy, cyano, adenosyl—can be converted in the liver to the methyl form, but not in therapeutic amounts and with great difficulty especially if you suffer from chronic conditions.
