Background:More than 40 million Americans suffer from allergies that are initially seasonal but, over time, can become year-round annoyances. They’re caused by an over-active immune system or hyperimmunity. In simplest terms, exposure to an allergen—such as pollen, mold, dust, mite and animal dander— produces an allergic response by the body's immune system.
More specifically, allergen exposure triggers T-cells to release interleukins. These interleukins cause antibodies specific to the allergen to be produced. These antibodies then travel around the body and attach themselves to mast cells, which store inflammatory mediators such as histamine. When the body next comes into contact with that allergen, it binds to the antibody that’s already bound to the mast cell, causing the mast cell to break down.
This broken-down mast cell releases the histamine and other inflammatory substances that produce allergy symptoms: nasal blockage, congestion, itching, sneezing, coughing, sore throat, and runny nose.
While many people opt for medications, many others suffer with allergies because they don’t want to deal with the side effects of drugs—anxiety, fatigue, headache and drowsiness. Of course, the best solution is to maintain a healthy immune system before it becomes a problem.
