Is it okay for breastfeeding mothers to take magnesium?

Yes. Taking a magnesium supplement while nursing is actually recommended. In Dr. Carolyn Dean’s book, The Magnesium Miracle, she recommends that nursing/breastfeeding mothers take about 600mg of magnesium due to their increased need for it. There aren't dangerous side-effects of taking too much magnesium either, unless you have serious kidney problems. What you will notice if you do take too much would be diarrhea. This is the body’s way of getting rid of magnesium that isn’t absorbed.
