Why does Jigsaw Magnesium w/SRT have "bad additives" in it?

Posted by

Over the years, I've seen several instances where someone writes something online like, "Don't take Jigsaw Mag SRT, it has bad additives in it."

Sigh...

Here is the list of ingredients used in Jigsaw Magnesium w/SRT® (Sustained Release Technology) tablets:

I can't be 100% certain, but I presume in most cases, these people are concerned with the “Other Ingredients” section -- Microcrystalline Cellulose, Modified Cellulose, Croscarmellose Sodium, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Silicon Dioxide, and Micro Wax.

Allow me to explain what each these are, and why they are used.

The first three (Microcrystalline Cellulose, Modified Cellulose, Croscarmellose Sodium) are plant based fiber that make up our Sustained Release Technology.  Essentially, these cause the tablet to break down slowly over time as it travels through your GI tract, instead of disintegrating quickly and dumping the magnesium into your body in a short amount of time, which often causes bowel discomfort.  (Much more on that subject in Why Don't Jigsaw SRT Tablets Dissolve in Water?)

The fourth & fifth (Ascorbyl Palmitate & Silicon Dioxide) are used as "flow agents" or "anti-caking agents" to keep the tablet machine from gunking up during the manufacturing process. (More on Ascrobyl Palmitate here.)

The sixth (Micro Wax) is the exterior coating that helps to mask somewhat bitter taste, and makes it easier to swallow.

Are these bad additives?

Google search each of these ingredients and you'll find they are safe for the overwhelming majority.

However, there are almost certainly some individuals that have sensitivities to any one (or more) of these.

For better or for worse, all of these components are necessary for us to produce Jigsaw Magnesium w/SRT tablets.
