Syndrome X: Common Symptoms
You may have Syndrome X if you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- Insulin resistance (the body’s cells develop a resistance to insulin, making it difficult to convert sugar (glucose) to energy)
- Prothrombotic state (e.g., high fibrinogen or plasminogen activator inhibitor [–1] in the blood), also known as thick blood
- High blood pressure (130/85 mm/Hg or higher)
- Pro-inflammatory state (e.g., elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in the blood)1
- Trouble with extra weight around the middle
- Difficulty losing weight
- Weight gain
- High triglyceride levels (also known as high blood fats)
- Low HDL (good) cholesterol levels and high LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Read more about cholesterol.
The following tests and procedures may help you find out if you have Syndrome X or other related chronic conditions:
- Online Self-assessments – Self-assessments, such as the Candidiasis Self-assessment and the Magnesium Assessment, can help you determine some of the root cause(s) of your chronic conditions. Learn more about Self-assessments.
- Blood Pressure Reading — A cuff is placed around your upper arm and inflated, while a healthcare professional determines your diastolic and systolic blood pressure. High blood pressure can be one indicator of the possibility of Syndrome X.
- Fasting Glucose Tolerance Test — A simple blood test taken after fasting (usually 12 to 14 hours of fasting is required before the test is taken), which measures the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood.
- C-Reactive Protein Test — A simple blood test that measures C-reactive protein levels in the blood. High C-reactive protein levels indicate the presence of systemic inflammation, usually found in those who suffer from Syndrome X.
- Lipid Profile — Those who have Syndrome X exhibit low HDL (good) cholesterol, high LDL (bad) cholesterol and high triglyceride levels. A simple blood test taken after fasting for 12 to 14 hours can determine lipid levels. The lipid profile includes:
- Total cholesterol
- HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)
- LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol)
- Triglycerides
