Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Common Causes
Print Page
Send a Link
Many medical experts believe that SAD is related to the body’s production of melatonin, a sleep-related hormone also associated with depression that is secreted by the pineal gland. Melatonin is produced at higher levels during periods of darkness. The short days and indoor lifestyle associated with the winter months limit exposure to sunlight, disrupting the body’s natural circadian rhythms—the natural cycles by which the body produces hormones, chemicals and neurotransmitters. As a result, melatonin production can fluctuate, which may increase susceptibility to depression.

Some people who work in buildings without windows (where there is little or no access to natural sunlight) may also experience SAD-type symptoms at any time of the year.
