Fibromyalgia: Common Symptoms
Print Page Send a Link

You may have fibromyalgia if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:
  • Chronic, widespread pain throughout different parts of the body
  • Shooting, stabbing pain in different areas of the body
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation throughout the body
  • A series of tender points that are sore to the touch
  • Extreme fatigue
  • An inability to achieve deep, restorative sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Inability to handle stress
Diagnosis
Currently there are no specific laboratory tests that can indicate the presence of fibromyalgia. Healthcare professionals rely on the patient’s reported symptoms, medical history, and a tender point examination. During this exam, pressure is applied to specific points in the body to see if pain exists in these specific areas.

In order to be accurately diagnosed with fibromyalgia, the following must apply:
  • Chronic, widespread pain exists in different areas of the body for a minimum duration of three months.
  • Tenderness or pain is experienced when pressure is applied to at least 11 of the 18 specified tender points that are shown in the diagram.1

Fibromyalgia can be mistaken for other chronic conditions, or may co-exist with other conditions such as Lupus, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or heavy metal toxicity. The following tests and procedures may help reveal any undiagnosed conditions and nutrient deficiencies that may be causing (or contributing to) your symptoms:

  • Online Self-assessments – Self-assessments, such as the Candidiasis Self-assessment and the Magnesium Assessment, can help you determine some of the root cause(s) of your chronic conditions. Learn more about Self-assessments.
  • Heavy metal toxicity can produce vague symptoms that sometimes are mistaken for other chronic conditions. Discuss Heavy Metal Toxicity with your healthcare professional before receiving any diagnosis or treatment for a serious chronic condition. Read more about heavy metal toxicity.
