Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Conventional and Prescription Medications
Conventional/Prescription Medicines Used to Treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Conventional medicines can be prescribed by doctors to treat the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. These medicines may cause depletion of certain nutrients. The following is a list of common conventional medicines that may be used for CFS: - Desipramine – A tricyclic antidepressant that raises levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. The brand name is Norpramin®. Use of desipramine may deplete the body of Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin B-2.9,10
- Clomipramine – A tricyclic agent with both antidepressant and anti-obsessional properties. Like other tricyclics, clomipramine inhibits norepinephrine and serotonin uptake into central nerve terminals. The brand name is Anafranil®. Use of this drug may deplete the body of Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin B-2, and B-12.9,10
- Fluoxetine – An SSRI antidepressant that increases the activity of serotonin in the brain. The brand names are Prozac® and Sarafem™. There are no documented nutrient depletions with this drug.9
- Nortriptyline – A tricyclic antidepressant that raises levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. The brand name is Aventyl® Hydrochloride. Use of nortriptyline may deplete the body of Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin B-2.9,10
- Nystatin® – A drug used to treat fungal infections of the intestinal tract. It is taken orally, and rare side effects include diarrhea, upset stomach, stomach pain, and skin rash. It is not known to deplete any nutrients.9
- Paroxetine – A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant that increases the activity of serotonin in the brain. The brand name is Paxil™. There are no documented nutrient depletions with this drug.9
