Attention Deficit Disorder: Overview, Symptoms, Causes, Natural Treatments, and Medicine
Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are classically defined as developmental disorders that affect the ability to pay attention, stay focused, and sit still. Other classic features include hyperactivity and impulsivity.
ADD/ADHD are controversial topics of modern medicine, and many theories have been formulated to attempt to explain the nature of these disorders.
One theory suggests that the immune system and the neurological system work very closely together, and that a dysfunction of the immune system may cause neurological impairment. This is referred to as neuro-immune dysfunction syndrome, or NIDS.9 It is suggested that children with behavioral disorders such as ADD/ADHD may have NIDS. Much research is needed in the area of immune modulating drugs that can regulate the immune system dysfunction, thereby increasing neurological function.
Interestingly, children with ADD/ADHD and other developmental disorders tend to test positive for Candida overgrowth, heavy metal toxicity, multiple food allergies and sensitivities—all of which are signs of a dysfunctional immune system. The immune system may be damaged early in life due to viruses, vaccines, neonatal stress, and/or trauma. It is hypothesized that ADD/ADHD and other developmental type disorders may be autoimmune disorders caused by a malfunctioning immune system that mistakenly starts attacking itself. ADD/ADHD has long been considered a genetic disorder; however, the explosion in ADD/ADHD cases tends to negate the idea that these disorders are strictly genetic.
ADD/ADHD may be neurobiological disorders caused by damage of the frontal lobe of the brain. They may also be learned disorders perpetuated by a social environment that encourages and role models impulsivity and hyperactivity.
