Arthritis: Common Causes
Arthritis may be caused by:
Magnesium deficiency - A magnesium deficiency can cause arthritis and make it worse. The reason is that most people get lots of calcium in their diets, but without magnesium supplementation, the calcium does not get stored in the right places. Instead of the bones and teeth, it's gets deposited in the soft tissues of the body which can cause stiffness and pain in muscles and joints.
Infection – A bacteria called Propioni bacterium acnes has been found in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and is said to greatly increase the chances of rheumatoid arthritis. The bacteria typically passes from mother to fetus. Heavy use of antibiotics can increase the growth of these bacteria.
Exhausted immune system – When the body is overwhelmed trying to fight foreign organisms, environmental toxins, chemicals, heavy metals, and pesticides, the immune system becomes exhausted and malfunctions. T-cells literally become worn out. An exhausted immune system can trigger arthritis by mistakenly attacking the cells within the joint capsules.
Low adrenal function – DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that is transformed into estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. People with arthritis tend to have low levels of DHEA, which may also be an indication of adrenal fatigue syndrome.
Bacterial dysbiosis – Bacteria can overwhelm the body, entering into the synovial fluid that surrounds the joints.
Dietary oil imbalance – Arthritis can be triggered by a severe imbalance of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids.6 The body requires a ratio of 1:1 for optimal health. Oftentimes, a heavily processed diet can lead to an imbalance as high as 30:1 (omega-6 to omega-3). Changes in nutrition should focus on:
- Increasing dietary intake of fish oil, fish, nuts and seeds, and flax seed.
- Incorporating healthy saturated fats such as organic virgin coconut oil.
- Increasing monounsaturated fats such as olive oil.
- Greatly reducing polyunsaturated fats such as sunflower, safflower, corn oil, and other oils found in many processed foods.
- Eliminating trans fats completely (processed hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils greatly aggravate chronic conditions).
