Conventional medicines can be prescribed by doctors to treat the symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome. These medicines may cause depletion of certain nutrients. Following is a list of common conventional medicines that may be used for Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome:
  • Corticosteroids – This group of drugs is used to relieve inflammation in various parts of the body. Corticosteroids can be extremely fast and effective at treating symptoms of allergies, skin problems, asthma, arthritis, and other illnesses. However, because many corticosteroids contain a synthetic hormone that’s often 17 times more plentiful than that required by the body, they can suppress and even shut down adrenal function—causing an even greater hormonal imbalance than before treatment.3 In addition, the side effects can be severe, ranging from dizziness to kidney failure and death. Some of the more common corticosteroids are prednisone (brand names: Cortan®, Deltasone®, Prednisone®, etc.) and prednisolone.8
  • Hydrocortisone – Unlike synthetic corticosteroids, hydrocortisone (brand names: Cortef®, Hydrocortone®) contains a bio-identical form of cortisol. When taken in amounts similar to those required by the body and in pure form, prescription hydrocortisone can be very effective and doesn’t have the potentially serious side effects of corticosteroids. But hydrocortisone, taken in dosages greater than 20 mgs can also suppress adrenal function and, as such, should only be taken in the most severe cases.3
